The new Pormetxeta Square, located close to the Nervion River, was the result of the Competition “Europan VI” developed in 2001.

Pormetxeta Square is a project of urban development which began in 2003 and is part of the new zone of regeneration of the city within the Plan Bilbao RIA 2000. The project was selected to take part in the Spanish Architecture Exhibition – On Site – that was organized by MoMA New York in 2006; lately the exhibited model has been acquired by the museum for the permanent collection. The project is being carried out by Murcia´s architect-studio XPIRAL and by Madrid´s architect-studio MTM Architects. Both won the contest Europan 6 in June 2003 and continued the implementation of the works until now . The intervention represents a floor area of 21,868 m² of plaza and 22,950 m² of tower.
